Our Approach to therapy

The most important part of therapy is the relationship, or rapport, between you and your therapist.

Our approaches are focused on nurturing that rapport by being non-confrontational, radically inclusive, and always trauma-centered.

While each therapist will have their own style and approach, Meristem Therapy Services advocates for each client to be met with these essential core beliefs.

HARM Reducing

Harm reduction refers to the idea that the client is their own expert. They know what works for them and are able to determine what will work best, not the therapist. This makes therapy a relationship of equals, allowing for authentic trust and understanding to evolve over time.

Trauma-Centered

Trauma-centered approaches view every client as potentially having undisclosed trauma in their life that is impacting their ability to cope in a way that leads to a sense of flourishing. Trauma comes in all forms and sometimes can be seemingly insignificant, but nonetheless impactful on functioning.

Interpersonal

Interpersonal is the connection we make with others. The most important piece of our humanity is the connections we make and how we are nurtured within those connections. Finding ways to encourage clients to engage interpersonally and to find and overcome their stuck points is crucial to self-determination.

Meaning Focused

Without meaning in our lives, it is difficult to establish a sense of purpose. We encourage moving beyond work-as-purpose and support clients to find meaning in their lives that is nurturing and fulfilling. Knowing that we have a purpose-driven life is an essential factor in flourishing.
